THPA PG4 Hike & Fly Endorsement

Tuesday, 10 August 2021

On behalf of the THPA safety committee, we have the great pleasure to announce that Tasmania now has an endorsement for PG4 pilots to fly hike & fly sites!

Flying hike and fly or unrated sites is a goal for many pilots, but it is also seen as restricted to PG5 rated pilots.

This endorsement has been developed to provide PG4 pilots who are on the verge of PG5 and with the right skills, knowledge, and attitude the ability to fly hike & fly or unrated sites in Tasmania. The endorsement will allow a PG4 pilot to fly an unrated site without prior consultation of a local SSO or instructor as stipulated in section 5.3.3.4 of the operation manual. All the other PG4 privileges and limitations remain.

The idea of this endorsement was born in November 2020. The Safety Committee has developed this document in consultation with senior Tasmanian pilots, SAFA board, and the THPA Committee of Management.

Recently accepted by the SAFA board, you will find it in the document section of SAFA website, as well as the document section of the THPA website. You will also find on the THPA website the working document and application form explaining this endorsement in plain English. These have been uploaded to the documents section - members can access them once signed into the website.

Do not hesitate to contact any member of the Safety Committee if you would like any further information on this subject or if you would like to apply for this.

Thanks to all persons involved with a special mention to Luke Denniss (SO) for initiating and carrying this project to the end!
